When is it time to upgrade your existing switchboard?
Whether you upgrade your switchboard or not is completely up to you, however in some cases upgrading your switchboard may be required by law or by necessity.
You plan to sell or rent your home
Installing Air Conditioning
Adding Solar Panels
Upgrading to Electric Vehicle Charging
Home Renovations
Home Automation Systems
Installing smart home automation technology may require more consistent and reliable power distribution, this is only possible with a newer switchboard.
Increasing Power Outlets
Installing more power points or upgrading to modern outlets with USB ports can require the need for the upgrade of circuit protection to include new safety switches.
Replacing Lighting with LED
Although LED lights use less power, a full-scale lighting installation or upgrade often involves adding more lighting points. This can require the need for the upgrade of circuit protection to include new safety switches.
Why do old switchboards require upgrades?
There are 2 main reasons you should consider a new switchboard upgrade: compliance and increased safety in the event of a fault.
Compliance with WA Safety Standards
Older boards tend to lack essential safety features such as circuit breakers and RCD safety switches (residual current device), meaning they do not meet modern safety standards in Australia. In some cases, it may be illegal to rent or sell your home without an upgraded switchboard. If your switchboard was installed prior to 2008 then it may not be equipped with RCD safety switches, which are required by law under the Electricity Regulations 1947. If you are unsure if your switchboard is equipped with a safety switch, reach out to us for advice, or consider booking an electrical safety check with one of our licensed electricians.
Your Families Safety
No one wants anyone to get hurt however we often get complacent when it comes to electricity in our homes. In the many years that we have been helping families with their power needs we have discovered that most people think that if the powers on they are safe and no testing or repairs are needed. This is far from the truth!!! We need to make sure that if there is a fault with the electricity that the circuit protection in the switchboard will automatically turn the power off for you. The old fuse and circuit breakers are only there to protect the cable by stopping excessive amounts of power entering the circuit. Residual current devices (RCD’s) are the device that sensors an electric shock and trips off the power. At a minimum RCD’s should protect all power and lighting circuits but is highly recommended they are installed on all circuits.
No matter the job, Prolecko will make sure your electricity is safe.
Why Choose Prolecko?
At the end of the day, your current switchboard is the one thing protecting you from serious hazards related to your home’s electrical system, with outdated switchboards putting you at significantly higher risk of electrical fires, electrical shocks, short circuits, circuit overloads, asbestos contact.
