An RCD safety switch plays a crucial role in safeguarding people and properties against electrical mishaps by quickly disrupting power supply when a fault is detected. Despite its similarities to a circuit breaker, it offers a more person-focused protection by guarding against electrocution. Let’s delve into more about these important devices and how they operate.
What is a RCD switch?
An RCD safety switch is an electrical device designed to protect against electric shock and fires by quickly disconnecting the power supply when it detects current imbalances or faults in the circuit. RCDs provide protection from faulty wiring, broken appliances, and wet or damaged areas. They are particularly important in high-risk areas like outdoor spaces and bathrooms.
What does an RCD do?
An RCD monitors the flow of electricity in a circuit and trips instantly if there is a surge, current leakage, or contact with a live wire, preventing electric shocks and reducing the risk of electrical fires.
How does an RCD work?
An RCD works by continuously comparing the incoming and outgoing currents in a circuit. If it detects a difference, indicating a fault or current leakage, it rapidly interrupts the power supply, providing quick protection against electrical hazards.
RCD vs circuit breaker
An RCD safety switch is designed to protect people from electrocution by monitoring electricity flow and quickly cutting off the supply if imbalances are detected, reducing the risk of electric shock. In contrast, a circuit breaker safeguards electrical systems and wiring by activating to cut power in case of overload or short circuit situations, preventing damage to circuits and appliances. Installing an RCD switch on every circuit is crucial for comprehensive protection against electric shocks.
We Can Handle the Most Complex Installations
When it comes to electrical safety, it is extremely important to that you hire a proffessional to handle anything relate to your Residual Current Devices (RCDs), also known as safety switches.
The process of installing these critical devices encompasses a range of complexities, dependent on various factors. All of which our fully licenced electrician are equiped for.
Single Circuit Installation
The simplest level of installation is for a single circuit. This might be necessary for an individual appliance or specific area of your home or business. This involves only a minimal alteration to the existing electrical system.
Multi-Circuit Installation
A more complex task is the installation of RCDs on multiple circuits. This is necessary when wanting to ensure protection across a variety of electrical systems, such as lighting circuits, power outlets, and dedicated appliance circuits.
Complete Switchboard Upgrade
At times, an older switchboard may not support the installation of modern RCDs, necessitating a complete switchboard upgrade. This is the most complex level, as it involves a comprehensive understanding of the property’s entire electrical system.
Specialised Installations
In certain scenarios, such as in commercial or industrial properties, or properties with unique power requirements, the installation of RCDs may involve additional complexity. This could include three-phase RCDs, or RCDs with higher amp ratings. It might also involve working with systems designed to prevent nuisance tripping in environments with many electrical devices.
Testing and Compliance
After installation, each RCD needs to be tested to ensure it trips within the required timeframe, further adding to the complexity. Additionally, the installation must comply with Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000:2018), and may need to be inspected and certified by a licensed electrical inspector.
RCD requirements WA
It is now a requirement that all Perth homes must have at least 2 RCDS installed in any installation.

In domestic/residential installations:
- a maximum of three circuits should be protected by one RCD.
- If there are multiple sub-circuits, at least two RCDs must be installed
- All final sub-circuits should be RCD protected.
- The RCD should be installed at the switchboard where the final sub-circuit originates.
In non-domestic/commercial installations:
- RCD protection is required for socket outlet and lighting circuits up to 32 amps
- unless additional mechanical protection is provided, RCDs should be installed at the switchboard where the final sub-circuit originates.
